My wife and I are looking to head to Oahu (Honolulu or other areas of the island) starting the second to last week of February (21st or 22nd as I think those would be the cheapest travel days). We're leaving from MSP and would like to stay 6-7 nights. Our budget is at most $3500, but would of course like it to be around $2000 instead (ha ha). We'll also need a rental car.I'm dying to know any secrets to cheap travel; I've been looking at the usual sites (Farecast, Kayak, Expedia, Orbitz, VRBO) - and look to be able to get a 7 night stay for ~$3000 however I think it's possible to do better.Would opening a Delta credit card be worth our while? How about staying only at a Hilton resort after obtaining "instant gold" (via $deals). Being a novice traveler, I'm not 100% certain that booking through Expedia will allow us to gain points for either delta/hilton - does anyone have experience with this? Of course I'm concerned with free checked bags (I think you get one with a delta card, but again if you book through Expedia does that disqualify you?). Another question is whether or not to book before/on/after January 1st - any experience/knowledge here??As far as activities - we're fairly low-key - exploring the island via the rental car, relaxing on the beach, and snorkeling will be our only necessities. If anyone has mad skillz, it'd be cool to have a long layover in San Francisco as my wife has always wanted to go there. Thanks in advance to all for your interest and help!-----Expedia 2 Adults $2,731.17Flight taxes/fees, Taxes & Fees $360.48Total $3,091.65Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach ResortCheck in: Wed Feb-22-2012Check out: Wed Feb-29-2012Alamo Rent A Car Economy Car
