How much longer I should wait if I plan to buy a round-trip flight during Christmas week?

Since every airline increase their price quite significantly, I was told that I should wait because there will be empty seats and those seats will be sold to the passenger very cheaply at last minutes. Well, I don't know exactly how that works because I don't know how much longer I should wait before those "Last Minutes" deal come available. I prefer to fly Southwest because of free luggage check-in.Any suggestion please?
